Q1 is Over. Did You Win or Lose?

Category: Business Strategy | Series: The Vantage Edge

Take a look at the calendar. As of this week, 25% of 2026 is officially gone.

For most business owners, the first quarter flies by in a blur of "getting back to work" after the holidays. They put their heads down, grind, and don't look up until summer.

But at The Vantage Edge, we know that waiting until mid-year to check your compass is a recipe for getting lost.

If you want to hit your annual goals, you can't rely on New Year's Resolutions. You need Quarterly Pivots. It is time for a ruthless Q1 Audit.

The 3-Question Audit

Grab your P&L and your calendar. Answer these three questions honestly.

1. What was the "Profit Leader"?

Don't just look at what brought in the most revenue. Look at what brought in the most profit with the least effort.

  • Did you launch a new service that took off?

  • Did a specific type of client prove to be incredibly easy to work with?

  • The Pivot: How can you sell only this for the next 90 days?

2. What was the "Time Vampire"?

Look at your calendar. What activity or project ate up weeks of your life but contributed almost nothing to the bottom line?

  • Was it a complicated custom project?

  • Was it "networking" events that led to zero leads?

  • The Pivot: Kill it. Immediately. If it didn't work in Q1, it won't work in Q2. Stop throwing good time after bad.

3. The "Rule of 4" Test

Take your annual revenue goal and divide it by 4.

  • Example: Goal is $100,000. Q1 Target was $25,000.

  • Did you hit it?

    • Yes: Great. Keep the throttle down.

    • No: You don't just need to "catch up"; you need to change the math. If you are behind, doing the same thing in Q2 will leave you further behind. You need to increase volume, raise prices, or cut costs now.

The Vantage Point

The difference between a hobbyist and a CEO is the frequency of correction.

A hobbyist checks their progress in December. A CEO checks it every quarter (or every week).

You have 3 quarters left to win the game. But you can't win if you don't know the score.

Pivot now.
